Reading / Literature (K-12)

Reading is a fundamental skill that can unlock a number of previously unknown abilities within a person. Many difficulties students may experience in the learning process of any subject stems from not being able to comprehend, process, and recall the words used. Expanding vocabulary may seem exhausting and reading may seem too time consuming but the benefits of improving and mastering this skill can be immeasurable.

The Significance of Reading / Literature

The ability to not only read but comprehend what we read is at the heart of every process designed to learn any subject. Understanding the signs in mathematical equations, the steps of photosynthesis, the true meaning of a Shakespearean plan, or the strategy behind a successful run-pass option in football are all based on an individual's ability to make sense of words. The stronger this ability is, the more understandable things become. Many military and business leaders credit their success to understanding the principles in The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Outstanding actors often credit their best performances to a deep understanding of the script. Sometimes, the best feelings we experience come from reading a heartfelt card from a loved one.

More than Textbooks

During our collaborative work developing the personalized learning plan, our Education Specialists will identify the student's reading level and the specific things the student is interested in. This not only allows us to determine the student's current foundation but also identify the best way to build upon it. The Education Specialist will help define and translate complex words and phrases so they are more easily understood and provide alternative reading (such as movie reviews, sports articles, press releases, etc.) that will help strengthen the student's abilities while also challenging them to reach the next level. Comprehending the words in the textbook is important for the student's grade. Expanding to pieces of writing outside of that is important for the student's continued growth through life.
