History / Social Studies (K-12)

Many students often find History / Social Studies boring. To them, it is all about memorizing the names of people and date of events. Some feel the information they are required to learn is incomplete, incorrect, or unimportant. For others, they feel the emphasis placed on certain topics is insulting to them and framed in such a way that they find exclusive to the diversity of their family and friends.

The Significance of History / Social Studies

Today was shaped by yesterday. The way people relate to each another, they way nations interact during times of peace and war, the motivations to build better homes, cars, phones, rockets, and computers all stem from the problems and issues that came before us. Usain Bolt became a household name because of his amazing athletic ability and because Ancient Greece created the Olympics around 776 BCE and a Frenchman revived it 1894. The first test of what would become 5G technology actually came towards the end of World War I as a means to communicate over great distances without wires. Then ties to now in fascinating ways.

Completing the Picture

A recurring theme at Shining Star is to make a subject relatable to the student. To do that, we go beyond discussing names and dates and explain why the people and events are important to know. Spoiler Alert: It isn't to simply get a good grade. Building interest often begins with accenting "why" instead of "when" and "who" for today's student. Why does Leonardo Da Vinci matter? Perhaps it's because in the 1500's he was among the first to sketch a design for the invention that  Karl Benz would improve then patent which ultimately became the car that Kanye West repeatedly references in his music: Mercedes Benz.
